Frequently asked questions

What is a workers' comp class code?
It's the code NCCI uses to price your workers' comp premium based on what a job actually involves — not the job title on paper. Two employees with the same title but different duties can carry different codes, and the wrong code can mean the wrong price.
How do I find my current class codes?
Check your policy declarations page or your most recent premium audit worksheet. Both list the class code(s) your carrier has assigned to your payroll, along with the payroll amount charged to each.
How common are classification errors?
NCCI's own classification inspection data found governing-code changes on more than 60% of inspected files for the two most commonly misclassified codes. That figure is from files that were actually inspected and specifically flagged as worst-offenders — it isn't a claim that most businesses in general are misclassified. Still, errors are common enough that a free check is worth running.
What's the 3-year retroactive window?
If a genuine classification error is found, overcharges are typically recoverable retroactively for a period commonly cited around 3 years, though the exact window depends on your carrier and state. It's worth checking rather than assuming it's too late.
What states does ClassCheck support?
ClassCheck covers NCCI states — roughly 35+ states plus DC. A handful of states use their own independent rating bureau or a monopolistic state fund instead of NCCI and aren't supported yet. See the full list of supported states
Is this legal, insurance, or accounting advice?

Is my data stored?
Free-checker submissions aren't stored in a database in this version. If you give us an email address, we keep it only to respond to you. Read our privacy policy
How accurate is the free checker?
It's conservative by design — it only flags a code as suspect when the role description genuinely conflicts with a known classification pattern, and it gives a confidence level with every flag. It's a starting point, not a substitute for the paid line-by-line review.
